Blog Post 7

Chenyang Li makes the assumption that grown children's parents would be happier if they stayed at home with their children.  I believe this is quite a leap.  Extreme cases such as elderly abuse clearly show that living at home may not always be a good thing.  Taking care of their parents also adds a financial strain on their grown children.  They may not be able to financially provide for their parents as well as they should.  The state may have the available resources in a home to care for these elderly people that their children simply do not.  Parents may also feel guilty for making their children take care of them, not making them happier. It is pointed out that the Chinese value respecting the old, however, overall abuse rates of the Asian elderly range all the way up to 44%.  I would also argue that in cases of children who have dealt with child abuse, they have no obligation to their parents when they are grown.
