Mr. Takahashi’s words seem enough to know that
dropping the nuclear bombs was not necessary. “Or if the Allies had said they
would allow the emperor system to continue, Japan would instantly have raised
its hands” (Mr. Takahashi).
There were diplomatic alternatives, of course there were.
Absent from our readings is the modern perspective on nuclear weapons and the
Non-proliferation Treaty. The United States is one of the only countries to
reject the Non-proliferation Treaty. The United States is set to spend one
trillion dollars on upgrading its nuclear arsenal in the coming decades (follow
the DemocracyNow! link for that data). And the US has armed Israel with nuclear
weapons. This may be the worst of US actions because the US has created a
nuclear power outside of its own jurisdiction in a state trending towards
jingoist fascism. The same country that devastated Hiroshima has learned
nothing. We seem to be heading towards our own destruction. As for the rest of
the world— why would any other country stand down their nuclear arsenal when
the reigning imperial power refuses to even sign a non-proliferation treaty, is
arming militant states and has a history of using Nuclear weapons for personal
gain? This responsibility lands squarely on our shoulders. And as citizens of
this country benefiting from its wealth we personally are responsible.
