In the readings on
sweatshops, the main concerning topic was children working in very hazardous
conditions in the working environments. In the Sayarthi interview he says, “It’s
better to work in the carpet industry than resort to prostitution or
starvation.” I think the author here is committing a fallacy of false analogy
because I don’t think the implications of working in the carpet industry are
comparable to starvation or prostitution at all. In one case, if the children cry for their mothers, they
are beaten and this type of abuse happens in various countries. Also, sometimes
“they are hung upside down from trees and poked with cigarettes.” This type of
abuse is given to children who are only looking for a way out. There was even
one case that was discussed in the interview where a 12 year old boy who tried
to run away from the industry was caught. He was beaten so bad that he
eventually collapsed. His body was torn into three pieces and they buried those
pieces in three different locations.
Starvation is something that is
caused by hunger. You can suffer and die from it just like being beaten to
death but the main difference is one is unintentional harm and the other one is
intentional harm. Also, prostitution and the mistreatment that happens in
carpet industries is difficult to compare because prostitution is selling your
body for sex and the physical abuse and maltreatment these children get from
the industries does not compare. Even though prostitution can be seen as
degrading, at least the end result isn't necessarily death.
