According to many of
these sex slavery articles, many of the young women voluntarily sold themselves
to the brothel because that’s how financially unstable their homes were. It is
a very selfless act but it’s too extreme and there needs to be other
opportunities available in order to support their families. I think the root of
the problem is more of an economic problem because the fact that young women
need to sell their bodies in order to support their families is extreme and not
right. If the economy in Cambodia was more stable, then women would have more
job opportunities and options to earn money to support their families. In
Cambodia, women are seen as “second-class citizens” and the brothels is a
chance for them to feel like first- class citizens because their role in
society is finally seen as some value in their eyes.
Also, women who are rescued from
brothels are likely to return because of the addiction of the metamphetamines.
AIDS is very prevalent in these brothels and many women die from it. These women
are helpless and becoming a sex slave is the primary problem. I think that women who are freed from these
brothels can’t just immediately jump back into their old lives. They need
serious counseling and help so that the possibility of them ever returning to
the brothel could never exist. They need to be shown opportunities for them out
in the real world and that they could do something remarkable with their lives.
